Work Force Training

Southcentral Mississippi Works is a consortium of seventeen Mississippi counties dedicated to improving the skill levels of area residents and, thus, improving their employment opportunities while ensuring that area employers have access to a skilled and productive labor force.

CMPDD, in partnership with Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District, plans and coordinates workforce development activities from a variety of agencies and organizations to ensure a comprehensive approach to employment and training needs. "One-Stop" Career Centers, located throughout the area, provide job seekers, incumbent workers, and employers with information and assistance specific to their individual needs.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

TITLE VIII of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides additional funds for activities under the Workforce Investment Act.  Funding allocations and operational guidance have not yet been provided; however, Southcentral Mississippi Works will receive additional funding for Adults, Dislocated Workers, and Youth as a result of this legislation.

ARRA specifically allows local areas to use stimulus funds for Youth to provide a summer work experience program for economically disadvantaged youth up to age 24.  Youth will work at primarily public sector worksites for approximately 8 weeks and will be paid minimum wage.  Southcentral Mississippi Works anticipates receiving just over $3 million for this program.

Adult and Dislocated Worker funds are subject to normal WIA regulations but may be used to contract for training programs serving multiple participants and to provide supportive services to participants while in training.

Questions about the ARRA (stimulus) funds for Workforce may be directed to James McGuffee at 601-321-2162 or jmcguffee@cmpdd.org.
